The 6 levels of drywall finish
The industry standard (GA-214) defines finish levels 0 through 5 — and your garage doesn’t need the same wall as your great room. Here’s what each level means, so your estimate matches your space, not a one-size-fits-all price.
Level 0Bare Board
Board hung, screws set — no tape, no compound. Strictly a construction stage for inspections or temporary walls, never a finished surface. We take every living space well past this point.
Level 1Fire Tape
A single pass of compound embedding the tape, ridges and all. Its job is sealing joints against smoke and dust in attics, plenums, and service areas nobody ever sees.
Level 2Garage & Utility
Tape plus a coat over every joint and screw head, no sanding. Tool marks are acceptable here — the honest workhorse finish for garages, storage rooms, and workshops.
Level 3Texture-Ready
An added coat over tape and fasteners plus a first sanding pass. Flat enough to carry a heavy knockdown or orange-peel texture that will do the visual finishing.
Level 4Paint-Ready Smooth
Two coats over seams, three over screws, sanded flat. The standard for South Florida living spaces with flat or eggshell paint — the sweet spot of smoothness and budget.
Level 5Skim-Coat Perfection
A thin skim coat over the entire Level-4 surface. For gloss paint, statement walls, and rooms with big windows where raking light would expose even a whisper of a seam.
Not sure which level your project calls for? We spec it room by room in your free estimate — so you never pay Level-5 prices for a storage closet, and your living room never settles for less.
